LTC3355 Super capacitor charging current

Hi,

As per the datasheet of LTC3355, the charge current of the Super capacitor is in the range form 0.1A to 1A.

Kindly provide the necessary information about the operating condition & stage of the Vout and Supercap, If the power available at the input is below the 0.1A supply to the capacitor.

  • Hello, The LTC3355 can still charge below 0.1A however as the RICHG resistor is increased above the 604kΩ range the average charge current might be a little less accurate. How much lower of a current is needed?

The charger input is from the LTC3355 output. Is the 0.1A referred to the available current from VOUT or the available input current to the LTC3355? What is the minimum input voltage and the regulated output voltage?

  • Hi,

    Thanks for the response.

    Regulated output voltage is 3.3V.

What is the condition/stage of the Regulated output with respect to the Super capacitor charge current and input power availability. And the how is the flow when the Input power is below the Super capacitor charge + Regulator Output load.

Kindly share the information for the interrelation/dependency of Input, Output and charge on each other.

  • Hello, The LTC3355 has a step down regulator to VOUT and an LDO SCAP charger to VCAP. The load on VOUT will equal ICHRG. The IOUT available is VIN*IIN*Efficiency/VOUT. If you have a 12V input with 0.1A and are operating at 85% efficiency, the maximum IOUT with a 3.3V output is 309mA. IOUT is shared between the load and the charger. If VOUT drops out of regulation because of lack of input power, RSTB will pull low and the charger will stop. Hopefully the input current limit will be set correctly to avoid this.

  • Hi, If we have 388.23mW power available at the input for 330mW of output power requirement with 85% efficiencey. then what will be the REG_OUT and I_charge possibilities.

  • Hello, Considering that 330mW/388mW is 85% all the power will go to the load when the load is 330mW. The input current limit should be set to prevent the charger plus the load from exceeding 330mW. ICHRG should be set so the minimum or nominal load plus the charge current is a maximum of 0.1A, 330mW with a 3.3V output. If the input current is set correctly when the load plus the charge current approaches the input current limit the charge current will be disabled to allow power to the load.
