isoSPI twisted pair reccomendation

Thread Summary

The user inquired about the specifications or recommendations for 22AWG PFA 600V twisted cables for the ADBMS6830B Eval Board and FSAE accumulator. The final answer recommends using CAT 5e cables, which have a characteristic impedance of 100 Ohm (±15 Ohm) and 1.4 to 2 turns per cm (50 to 70 turns per meter).

Hi ADI Engineers,

We have received the ADBMS6830B Eval Board along with some 22AWG PFA 600V twisted cables. However, we cannot find the manufacturer’s part number/reference.

We would like to use Molex DuraClik terminals and twisted-pair cables for our FSAE accumulator. Since the datasheets do not specify specific isoSPI cable requirements, we are asking here to benefit the community (and because forum responses are often faster).

Could you provide the specifications or recommendations for these cables?

Thanks for your help!

  • Hi,
We normally use CAT 5e cable as reference for isoSPI cables, they closely resemble the ones we used in the EV kit and works well with isoSPI. Since CAT 5e twisted pairs exhibit a tolerance of +/-15 Ohm with regards to their typical characteristic impedance of 100 Ohm (between 1 and 100 MHz), we have no concerns with signal reflections even if our termination circuit is not perfectly matched (to the exact Ohm). We normally use 1.4 to 2 turns per cm for our twisted pair, that is between 50 and 70 turns per meter.
