Subject: LTC4100: Is VDD supply mandatory during battery discharge/standalone use?

Category: Hardware
Product Number: LTC4100
Hi ADI Support Team,
I am designing a system using the LTC4100 smart battery charger and have a question regarding the VDD pin requirements.
According to the LTC4100 datasheet, the part is held in reset until VDD is at least 3V. I would like to clarify the following:
  1. Requirement during discharge: Does the LTC4100 require a constant VDD supply while the battery is being discharged to the system load and no DC input is present?
  2. Startup without VDD: If the system is powered on from a battery (cold start), will the INFET driver correctly manage the power path if VDD is not yet available?
  3. Communication: If VDD is removed during battery-only operation to save power, will the SMBus interface still respond to safety signals or host queries?
My goal is to minimize battery drain when the AC adapter is disconnected. Any guidance on the minimum necessary state for VDD would be appreciated.
Thank you!
