Technical Questions Regarding LTC3300-1 Usage

Category: Hardware
Product Number: LTC3300-1

Hello Team,

We are planning to use the LTC3300-1 active balancer in a high-capacity 7s battery configuration. We have reviewed the demo boards and datasheet of the product. In the reference designs we examined, it is used together with the LTC6804 cell monitor.

In this regard, we would appreciate your answers to the following questions:

  1. Is it possible to use the LTC3300-1 with a different cell monitor? What should we consider when integrating an alternative cell monitor?
  2. Can we directly connect the serial lines (SPI or other communication interfaces) of the LTC3300-1 to our processor for programming? If so, what is the recommended connection structure and key considerations?
  3. Is there a software manual available for the LTC3300-1? If so, could you please share it with us?

We look forward to your response and appreciate your support.

Best regards,

Hasan Bilir

  • Hello,

    1. Yes the LTC3300 can be used with other monitors. When the LTC3300 was released the LTC6804 was because it could monitor up to 12 cells and also communicate directly to the LTC3300s. This allowed only 1 isolator to be used. The number of cells in the stack is one of the main things to consider when choosing the monitor. Communication might be another.

    2. In many cases isolation is required between the battery stack and low voltage system. If isolation is not needed then a processor can communicate directly to the lower LTC3300. Since 2x LTC3300s are required for 7 cells, the bottom LTC3300 will need to communicate with the top LTC3300 as described in the datasheet and DC2100 demo manual.

    3. I could not find a software manual for this, sorry.

  • Hello,

I am designing a 7-cell battery balancing system using two LTC3300ILXE ICs, with control handled by an MCU. According to Figure 50 in the "DEMO CIRCUIT 2100B - A/D" document, the C1, C2, and C3 lines in the design will be shorted. Therefore, I plan to remove the circuit components connected to these lines and instead connect the C1, C2, and C3 pins of the IC directly to the -V node.

Additionally, since the C7 and C8 lines will also be shorted, I will remove the components on these lines as well. I will then connect the corresponding C7 and C8 pins of the second IC to the C6 line.

Also, should the Top6_TS and Bot6_TS pins be shorted together?

Is there anything else I need to do for this configuration? Is following the connection diagram in Figure 50 sufficient for a 7-cell setup? Can I proceed with my own design based on the "DEMO CIRCUIT 2100B - A/D" documentation?

We look forward to your response and appreciate your support.
