Getting a fast charge indication when no battery attached.

Category: Hardware
Product Number: MAX1758

I have a MAX1758 charger set up to charge a 4S1P pack using an 18V DC input. When I attach my DC in with no battery and apply power, the Fast Charge pin goes low and indicates fast charge mode. If I attach a battery, it behaves as expected. The bit goes low during charge and high when charge complete. When I do this on the reference design, it doesn't behave this way. The Fast Charge bit stays high as expected when no battery is attached. I have the Fast Charge bit connected to an LED same as the reference design. I also have it running to my processor with a diode for isolation, but even if I remove the diode I get the same behavior. Schematic page attached for reference.

  • Further probing I realized that when looking at the eval board I had the jumper installed to fake out the thermal sensor. When I remove the jumper, the eval kit has the same behavior. The fast charge light comes on. I also noticed that with the jumper installed the switcher is actually switching and the battery voltage is at about 15V. With it removed the switching node is at about 2.75VDC. My thermistor in my pack is the recommended 10K NTC to ground. Is there a way to stabilize this and still have the thermistor function properly when the battery is installed?
