max1898 Quiescent current

Category: Hardware
Product Number: MAX1898

Hi,

We need a 1 cell Li-pol charger, input voltage rate of 5 to ~10v, charge rate of 100mA to 200mA needed. We are currently using the MAX1898 in our circuit. But I realized the specifications do not match the datasheet. The input current to VIN pin is more than 300uA even if charger is set to disable (EN/OK low). Unfortunately, I can not find any VIN Quiescent current this chip takes when EN/OK is set to low, while the input voltage is 5 to 10v and battery is connected.

The VIN Quiescent current is important for us as we have two batteries in the system. This chip is supposed to take power from the main battery. Thus, the low Quiescent current matters. Please let me know if you have any valid numbers for Quiescent current for this chip or if you have any suggestions for alternative chip. I just found LTC4079, but I need your advise as well.

Thanks,

Amir

  • Hi,

EC spec IN, CS input current as IIN + ICS as shown

Is the 300uA input current measured include the current flow to   pin?

    Thanks,

    CL

  • Thanks for the reply here. I think at the moment this current consumptions is not a challenage at the moment.

I have a couple of problems with out battery pack regarding the configurations and holding the configuration. I understand the device does not hold register values after a power reset. But the problem is I can not even reset the chip. I see sometimes the chip hangs. For example, pressing the button does not show the LED bar. Sometimes the LED bar works, but reading the capacity by I2C does not work. In the 3rd case, I press the button to show the level, but it never turns off after the timeout. In all cases, a power reboot would fix it. But the problem is that this fuel gauge is inside the sealed battery pack. We are not supposed to ask a customer to short-circuit the battery pack to reset the internal fuse and then reprogram it after the power recovery.

I would like to know what are the ways to reset the chip without reseting its power supply. Or how to recover the chip from a bad state.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

  • Hi Amir,

I am not quite understood your statement.   MAX1898 there is no I2C??

    CL

  • Hi,

Yes, I have cases that the fuel guage does work and I can configure some registers. But I can not read capacity registers.

This I2C is only one of the problems I have. I listed other issues too that I am interested to know more about each. So, I wonder if you are aware of some potential issues with this chip and have a solution or suggestion to prevent.

Since this is a battery pack, there are pogo pins to contact the pack via I2C pins. I do not know how resistant these GPIO pins are to high voltage noises from insertion/removal.

    Thanks,

    Amir

  • Hi Amir,

I think we are talking about different thing.  MAX1898 has no I2C communication and GPIO pin.  No, I don't know any potential issue with MAX1898.

    Rgds,

    CL

  • Oh right. I am so sorry. I just openned another thread for this issue.

MAX17263 does not hold the settings - I2C issues too

I ended up not using max1298 because of the leakage current.
