Hi Mike, that's the exact same problem I've been battling with, and the FAE said they are not aware that Vsys should even shutdown as a result of over-current.  I ended up using an external P-channel MOSFET driven by QBEXT from the MAX77975 to divert battery current from passing through the part.  This works well.
