1.The MAX8971 has a safe-out LDO that can be used to power up a low-power microcontroller when there is no battery. This can potentially replace a separate LDO in the system.
2.The charging input can handle an absolute max of 22V, this might allow you to not use an OVP on the VBUS and just use a TVS diode.
