Question
In the ADE7753/ADE7763 datasheets the absolute max power dissipation is 450mW
and the typical is 25mW.
Which one do I need to follow as a rule for calculating the consumption of the
chip itself and in what condition is the maximum power dissipation intended?
Answer
The Absolute Maximum power dissipation given in table 3 of the ADE7753's
datasheet RevC is a package specification. This describes only what the
package is capable of handling and has nothing to do with the IC itself.
Both the ADE7753 and the ADE7763 have significantly lower power dissipations
and will not get even close
to this 450mW value. So this value comes from a package characterization. The
ADE7753 itself specifies its maximum current consumption at the end of table
1. AIdd = 3mA and DIdd = 4mA maximum. So the maximum total current
consumption of the chip is 7mA. The total power dissipation of the device is
therefore 36.75mW.
