SSM2212 exposed pad connection

Question

I'm a DFAE in Japan. 
 My customer asked me two questions about exposed pad. 
 Please give me answers. 
 1. what is exposed pad i LFCSP package for ? 
 2. what is the expected connection to exposed pad n the attached schematic?

The exposed pads were present in some packages to lower the ground connection impedance or improve thermal dissipation and for electrical shielding reasons. In some cases, it must be connected to a voltage with the lowest potential. Hence, it could be connected to the ground or the negative supply.
