Power protection for automotive electronics

Hello there,

We are in the design phase of an automotive product whose input voltage ranges from 9 to 36 V, so we required a power protection circuit like the MAX16126TCA+T surge stopper. Our question is whether we should choose a power regulator with an integrated power protection network or stick with a standard regulator. If we are using any power protection ICs?
