The MAX86916 sensor has a 200-micron optical class for optimum performance. Without this cover, accuracy and reliability, especially in bio-sensing and ambient light rejection, may be compromised. The sensor is not water or high-pressure rated, so it must be encapsulated to prevent water ingress and pressure damage. If the glass cover is removed, sealing is also necessary.
