What is the purpose of the LDO present on the MAXM86161?

This LDO powers the internal chip circuitry of the device. Page 13 of the datasheet says that when the LDO is turned off the part goes in to shutdown mode. Thus enabling the LDO actually enables the device. The output of the LDO  is 1.8V which needs to be decoupled usin an external 1µF capacitor.
