After setting the Mode configuration register of MAX30101/MAX30102 to be 0x03, the Mode configuration alternates between 0x03 and 0x00 when the register is read. What might be the cause of this?

After the configuration register is set, Mode configuration should remain unchanged unless it is reset. So if the data varies, the device must have been reset.
