ADPD1080 weird channel behavior / faulty connection

Category: Hardware
Product Number: ADPD1080

Hello,

I have two boards which behave weirdly on both slots:

E.g. for slot A the photodiode input connections is set to 5, such that PD1 is connected to channel 1, PD2 to channel 2, PD3 to channel 3 and PD4 to channel 4. However, when I only connect a photodiode to PD2 and leave the other photodiode inputs floating, both channel 2 and 4 react with similar strength to light pulses. This happens in normal mode, in normal mode with integrator chopping as well as in the TIA ADC mode with background light. When I only connect a photodiode to PD4 and leave the other photodiode inputs floating, channel 4 reacts and channel 2 doesn't. So it only happens in one direction. Additionally, channel 4 doesn't react as strongly to light as the other channels (except when PD2 is connected to a photodiode).
And for strong light inputs all channels react, even if only one photodiode input is connected to a photodiode, regardless of which channel is connected.

I have triple checked my register definitions, bit position definitions and mask definitions and can't find the error. I have two boards assembled which both behave this way.

Does anybody know what might be the cause of this behavior? Or can somebody spot something wrong with my register settings?
Help would be very much appreciated. If you need more info let me know.

These are all the register readouts of the ADPD after initilization:

  • More info: in the case only PD2 is connected to a photodiode: I just realized, that the channel 4 measurement only jumps to a similar measurement as the one for channel 2  is above 255. I.e. if the channel 2 measurement <= 255 the channel 4 measurement will be zero or close to zero. If the channel 2 measurement is >= 256 the channel 4 measurement will be in a similar range. The 256 threshold seems to be pretty rigid, i.e. I haven't seen this "rule" broken (watched for 50 samples or so, trying to stay close to the threshold). Here are a couple of example measurements that were close to the threshold value:

    channel 2 = 255, channel 4 = 0
    channel 2 = 235, channel 4 = 0
    channel 2 = 257, channel 4 = 256
    channel 2 = 265, channel 4 = 256
    channel 2 = 263, channel 4 = 256
