    Hi Kevin,
    

    You might want to take a look at the photometric modules such as ADPD188GG, ADPD188BI, or photometric analog front end (AFE) such as ADPD4100, ADPD1080. The modules have LED, PD and AFE inside.
    

    If you choose a module, you can turn off LED(s) by setting 0 current. For a photometric AFE, you can simply connect a PD to an input to measure the ambient light.
