TMC2240 100uF capacitor

Category: Hardware
Product Number: TMC2240

For the TMC2240 the datasheet lists, "A minimum capacity of 100µF at VS is recommended for best performance." on page 124. The schematic devkit for the product show a 47uF DNP capacitor for Vs. TMC2240-BOB_V10. How much is performance impacted by using a 47uF versus 100 uF.

The TMC2240-eval also doesn't show a large capacitor for Vs.

  • Hi Arane,

the TMC2240 operates the motor coils in a chopperd way. That means, supply current is drawn in a pulsed fashion. You have to design your power supply in a way, that it can cope with this. Voltage ripple on the VS terminal caused by the motor chopper should be kept well below 1V. Therefore, our recommendation to put a certain capacitor near the IC is more guessing, as it adds up to other capacitors in the system and supports your power supply. The system power supply normally involves higher capacitance. If the power supply capacitor is not far (i.e. interconnection resistance and inductance are low) the 47µF capacitor or even smaller can be fine.
