What happens when the accel experiences an acceleration greater than its
maximum reading range? We know that some accels suffer from a large d.c. error
being introduced on the output for a number of seconds after the event. What we
would like, of course, is that it simply clips the upper part of the signal and
flat lines at the max (6g) for the duration of the event.
If our gyros or accelerometers are exposed to stimulus above the rated range
they simply saturate. The output goes as close to the appropriate rail as
possible and stays there as long as the over-range is present. Recovery time is
determined by the output filter chosen by the user.
