What does "Not recommended for new designs" mean?

To whom it may concern:

Jewell Instruments has design in the ADXL103 into two major platform products which are being introduced this year.  When I was researching on your website today I was very much alarmed to see in the product's web page under Product Lifecycle:  Not recommended for new designs.  Is this a new product lifecycle change?  What does this mean in terms of obsolescence?  I really appreciate someone getting back to very soon.

  • Thank you for posting this question, Brian.  Despite the change in status, I am not aware of any imminent plans to obsolete this product. In general, we pride ourselves in supporting very long product life cycles, especially for products like the ADXL103, which have been very popular for well over a decade, now.   With that in mind, this product is presently manufactured on a process technology that is past its time as a "mainstream process technology," so we are investigating a number of different ways to extend its lifetime.  While we are going to do everything we can to continue supporting this product (or a suitable replacement), porting the design to a new process technology has risk factors that we are still working to understand in terms of feasibility and performance.  You should probably consider making a request through your sales channel to get a more official position from the team that is managing this process, but I hope that this perspective is helpful.
