What does "Not recommended for new designs" mean?

To whom it may concern:

Jewell Instruments has design in the ADXL103 into two major platform products which are being introduced this year.  When I was researching on your website today I was very much alarmed to see in the product's web page under Product Lifecycle:  Not recommended for new designs.  Is this a new product lifecycle change?  What does this mean in terms of obsolescence?  I really appreciate someone getting back to very soon.

Brian F. Ward,

Jewell Instruments

  • Thank you for posting this question, Brian.  Despite the change in status, I am not aware of any imminent plans to obsolete this product. In general, we pride ourselves in supporting very long product life cycles, especially for products like the ADXL103, which have been very popular for well over a decade, now.   With that in mind, this product is presently manufactured on a process technology that is past its time as a "mainstream process technology," so we are investigating a number of different ways to extend its lifetime.  While we are going to do everything we can to continue supporting this product (or a suitable replacement), porting the design to a new process technology has risk factors that we are still working to understand in terms of feasibility and performance.  You should probably consider making a request through your sales channel to get a more official position from the team that is managing this process, but I hope that this perspective is helpful.

  • If I come across this I consider if my need is only current or future.

Can I buy enough currently to cover my current production or anticipated production.

But Mark's comment is very good:  "this product is presently manufactured on a process technology that is past its time as a "mainstream process technology,"

    Legacy production can be expensive.

  • Thank you for offering your perspective on this! Your statement is true but we are working on a solution. Our only intent was awareness of risk, as we have observed elevated long-term risk, but are not concerned enough to initiate obsolescence processes. Our market demands that we do everything we can to avoid this. Even when we do have to take products off of the market, we typically offer pretty long period of time for placing and receiving last-time buys. Thanks again for posting!

  • By the way, for anyone who would like to review our official page on Product Life Cycle management, there is a lot of useful information at this link:

    I hope that this helps!
