Hello, myself(software) and another engineer(hardware) have been tasked with researching and prototyping a system for continuously measuring acceleration and impact force.  This is a first for both of us(yup we anticipate the great learning experience ahead ) and making a decision on which evaluation system to purchase and study is our first focus.

Here is what we know so far:

The list of MEMS sensors only show the ADXL180 as having the ability to detect up to 500 g.  However, I recently stumbled upon a breakout board for ADXL001  which also offers similar range.  The only issue with both of these are that they are single axis sensing.  (noob question) - Is the axis being monitored dependent on the orientation of the board? If so, is it typical to design a system with multiple single axis accelerometers(appropriately oriented) to capture the motion data as it is required for specific applications?

We also assume that since we are more into the research phase we need an actual evaluation kit, not breakout board (until we start prototyping our product).

    The ADXL180 is not recommended for new designs. For ADXL001, the acceleration sensitive axis is in plane of the chip, and the orientation is marked near Pin 8 (see Fig. 21 of the datasheet). For sensing acceleration along other orthogonal directions, your board layout should ensure that the sensitive axis of the ADXL001 is aligned to that direction. For Z axis, the part has to be mounted out of plane.
