ADXL327BCPZ behavior above 85 °C operating temperature

Thread Summary

The user inquires about the ADXL327BCPZ's behavior when operated slightly above 85°C. The support engineer indicates that while detailed characterization is not available, the sensor may continue to function with degraded accuracy, including significant offset and sensitivity drift, but should still qualitatively track acceleration. Testing under these conditions is recommended to assess consistency and reliability.

Hello,

I am using the ADXL327BCPZ and have a question regarding operation above the specified maximum operating temperature of 85 °C.

The datasheet specifies:

  • Operating temperature up to 85 °C

  • Absolute maximum (powered) up to 125 °C

My question is about behavior when the device is operated slightly above 85 °C (e.g., up to ~95 °C):

  • Does the sensor continue to function with degraded accuracy (e.g., increased offset and sensitivity drift)?

  • Or can the output lose its meaningful relationship to acceleration entirely?

In my application, high precision is not required. I only need to detect approximately 0.5 g±0.1 g0.5g±0.1g on the Z-axis. Under normal conditions, I use:
Vout=Vs/2+sensitivity⋅aVout=Vs/2+sensitivitya

If the temperature exceeds 85 °C, is it reasonable to expect that:

  • The sensitivity and offset may drift significantly, but

  • The output still qualitatively tracks acceleration (i.e., higher acceleration → higher output)?

Or should operation above 85 °C be considered unreliable even for coarse measurements?

Thank you for your support.

  • Hello  thanks for posting. We do not characterize in detail the device behavior over its operating temperature. Thus, I can not give you an specific answer.

That being said, I would at least expect what you suggest here:

    • Does the sensor continue to function with degraded accuracy (e.g., increased offset and sensitivity drift)?

    • The sensitivity and offset may drift significantly, but

    • The output still qualitatively tracks acceleration (i.e., higher acceleration → higher output)?

ADI does not guarantee any of the datasheet specifications outside the specified operating temperature range, and it is possible that a specific part of the sensor signal chain is not ready for such temperatures (e.g., front-end amplifiers, internal LDOs, etc.). As a result, you may experience higher noise levels or reduced stability, in addition to the offset or sensitivity variations you mentioned.

Still, I would be surprised if the device does not qualitatively track acceleration. I would suggest thoroughly testing it under these conditions to better understand how consistent the part remains in this environment.

I hope this clears your doubts. I am sorry I don not have any specific numbers available for you.
