using ADXl362 as temperature sensor

Thread Summary

The user inquired about using the ADXL362's temperature sensor for environmental temperature measurement. The final answer confirmed that while the sensor can provide some temperature data, it is primarily intended for accelerometer calibration. Additional insights suggested that using it as a full-fledged temperature sensor would require significant error modeling and consideration of environmental factors such as airflow and heat sources.

Hi Team,

I have been using ADXL362 as a motion detector and I noticed from the datasheet that it also has a temperature sensor in it. I know that temperature sensor is provided to calibrate the accelerometer readings.

But, I would like to know if it is possible to use ADXL362 as a temperature sensor. Can it function as a full-fledged temperature sensor ? Is there any limitation in using ADXL362 as a temperature sensor ?

  • Hi ,

    Thank you for your post and your use of ADXL362. While the ADXL362 possesses a temperature sensor, it is mainly used for calibration and not for measuring the environment's temperature.

    Best regards,
    John

  • Thank you John for your prompt answer. I understand it is used for calibration. But I would like to know the limitation of using ADXL362 as environment temperature sensor.

  • Thank you for posting your question in this forum.

    From a basic perspective, it would seem like the temperature sensor would be able to provide some level of local temperature monitoring.  Here are some measurement vs temperature curves that I found, in an older characterization repository.  Based on some quick visual inspection, it seems like you could do a single-temperature calibration to address the variation in offset and could probably come up with a 2nd or 3rd order polynomial to address the nonlinear error metric, which seems to be consistent in this particular group of parts.

    Suitability will probably boil down to how much you will need to invest into modelling the errors, along with understanding key environmental factors, which can change the physical relationship between what you are trying to measure and the ADXL362.  For example, can the airflow change speed and direction?  Are there variable heat sources, co-located with the ADXL362 or in some position of influence (over thermal system)?

    I hope that this helps!
