Accelerometer lifetime or suggestion for rail monitoring

Hi,

Does ADI have any data on the lifetime of their accelerometers?

I would like to find out if there are any accelerometers suitable to be installed on rail track for at least 10 years.

There are concerns about the reliability of MEMS accelerometers due to the high acceleration level incurred on the rail by passing trains. However, from the datasheet, it seems like many MEMS accelerometers can withstand very high shock. Assuming that a train passes by a section of the rail with an accelerometer every 10 minutes for 15 seconds, that is equivalent to 2160 s or 36 minutes of vibration that the accelerometer has to endure per day. Would the accelerometer survive for at least 10 years assuming that the acceleration is 150 g and the accelerometer is rated at 200 g with the maximum absolute rating at 10000 g?

Many thanks

  • Hi ,

Usually ADI parts have a reliability for 10 yrs.
As long as you don't exceed the ratings stipulated in the datasheet, the device should work well in your time frame.
I'll try to update you with new information regarding this.

    Best regards,
    John

  • Just wanted to check back in on this.  In general, the mechanical shock ratings are intended to support handling, during manufacturing, not repetitive shock, at those same levels, for extended periods of time.  If this is still a topic of interest, it would be better to identify the exact accelerometer and profile, so we can evaluate and share relevant information.  I hope that your project is going well and we look forward to hearing form you, in the future.
