FAQ: Which ADF7024 radio profile should I choose for my application?

Question:

The ADF7024 has a number of radio profiles. What factors should I consider when choosing a radio profile for my application?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Answer:

The ADF7024 simplifies the development process  by providing radio profiles that configure the ADF7024 radio for optimum RF performance. The radio profiles cover a range of typical data rates used in ISM band applications. The configuration register settings for each profile are shown in the radio profile section of the ADF7024 reference manual, UG-698 (available from the ADF7024 product page).

The choice of radio profile depends on the requirements of the application. For example, if long range is the primary requirement then Profile A is a good choice as it provides the best receiver sensitivity. If low power is the key requirement then profile F is the best option as the high data rate will minimize the amount of time the radio has to spend transmitting and receiving data, thereby reducing the system energy consumption. In many cases the profile requirements will be dictated by the regulatory requirements (e.g. ETSI EN 300-220) for channel spacing or the transmit and receive performance criteria like adjacent channel rejection (ACR) and adjacent channel power (ACP). The receiver channel bandwidths of the ADF7024 (i.e. the IF filter bandwidth) is shown in the following table along with typical channel spacings. For information on RF performance like ACR and ACP for each radio profile, please refer to the ADF7024 datasheet.

Radio Profile Data Rate (kbps)

FSK/GFSK Freq Deviation

(kHz)

Receiver Channel Bandwidth (kHz) Recommended Channel Spacing (kHz) Receiver Sensitivity (dBm), BER = 0.1%
A 9.6 9.6 100 ≥150 kHz -111
B 38.4 20 100 ≥150 kHz -107.5
C 50 25 100 ≥150 kHz -107.4
D 100 25 100 ≥150 kHz -105
E 200 50 200 ≥300 kHz -103
F 300 75 300 ≥400 kHz -100.5
