hdl_2019r2 for ZED board does not boot with Full fledged GUI

Category: Software
Product Number: AD-FMCOMMS2-EBZ
Software Version: hdl_2019_r2

Hi,

I am using following HDL https://github.com/analogdevicesinc/hdl/releases/tag/2019_r2 and associated Linux branch https://github.com/analogdevicesinc/linux/tree/2019_R2

My Boards are : Zed board  + AD-FMCOMMS2-EBZ

When  I try to boot using built images I am not able to get proper output at HDMI Monitor. It shows Linux icon but does not show the complete Linux GUI after boot. It as if the booting not complete.

Attached is the image

I am attaching the boot log when i boot with ZED Board.

  • I have tested default pre-built images for 2019R2 on zed board. Here too i observe no GUI output on monitor. The screen is stuck at linux icon on screen

Where as when i boot with latest prebuilt images i am able to get Linux Desktop on screen. So i guess this is not a hardware issue

  • Hi ,

2019_r2 release is pretty old and we stopped maintaining it, and I recommend to go with latest Kuiper release - 2022_r2 Patch1.

But even so, you can still download the official Kuiper 2019_r2 SD Card image from here ("Previous Kuiper Linux Releases" section) and then configure the SD card for Zed + fmcomms2 by following the steps here (AMD/Xilinx -> Zynq Projects section).

A quick start guide can also be found here.

    Thanks,

    Stefan

  • Hi,

    1. I could boot with complete Linux Desktop GUI using the official Kuiper 2019_r2 SD Card image on ZED Board.

    2. Now  I replaced the devicetree.dtb with dtb files  built from source for ZED board  https://github.com/analogdevicesinc/hdl/releases/tag/2019_r2

I adopted the steps mentioned in https://wiki.analog.com/resources/eval/user-guides/ad-fmcomms2-ebz/software/linux/zynq_2014r2 and used steps in under title "Using the Linaro toolchain"

In this case I could not get the Monitor working "it displayed input timing not supported"

The BOOT.bin and uIMAGE were same as in prebuilt official SD card image.

Note :: I am able to access command line via debug UART interface

    I am attaching both working devicetree.dtb and non-working devicetree.dtb

    1.

    devicetree_working.rar

    2.zynq-zed-adv7511-ad9361-fmcomms2-3.rar

  • Attaching boot log of working and non working

here I observe that with dtb change following msg appears

""systemd-udevd[1359]: could not open moddep file '/lib/modules/4.14.0-gb9e7064/modules.dep.bin'""
