ADRV9009-ZU11EG Multi SOM: "Device or resource busy" for many adrv9009-phy channels and iio_attr -D hmc7044-ext status on primary gives "input/output error"

Category: Hardware
Product Number: ADRV9009-ZU11EG; ADRV2CRR-FMC; EVAL-HMC7044
Software Version: Kuiper 2021_r2

Trying to follow the multi-som example from this page. I've gotten all of the images written, and copied the appropriate boot files to /boot for the primary and secondary boards, respectively (specifically /boot/zynqmp-common/Image, /boot/zynqmp-adrv9009-zu11eg-revb-adrv2crr-fmc-revb/BOOT.BIN, and /boot/zynqmp-adrv9009-zu11eg-revb-adrv2crr-fmc-revb/zynqmp-adrv9009-zu11eg-revb-adrv2crr-fmc-revb-sync-multisom-{primary x 1, secondary x 3}).

Detailed hardware setup is as follows:

======= Board 1 (Primary) =========

ADRV2CRR-FMC (Rev C.1)

ADRV9009-ZU11EG

SPI connections to EVAL-HMC7044:

    2 -> 12
    3 -> 20
    4 -> 16
    5 -> 18
    6 -> 14

==== Board 2, 3, 4 (Secondary) ======

ADRV2CRR-FMC (Rev C.1)

ADRV9009-ZU11EG

======== EVAL-HMC7044 ==========

Power

    +5V -> TP38
GND -> TP34

RF Connections

    SCLKOUT5_P -> Board 4 SYNC
    CLKOUT6_P -> Board 3 SYNC
    SCLKOUT9_P -> Board 1 SYNC
CLKOUT10_P -> Board 2 SYNC

CLKOUT0_P/N -> Board 3 REFCLK_P/N
CLKOUT2_P/N -> Board 4 REFCLK_P/N
CLKOUT8_P/N -> Board 1 REFCLK_P/N
CLKOUT12_P/N -> Board 2 REFCLK_P/N

================================

I am able to boot and bring up all 4 boards, I've set a static IP for all of them and can ssh into them.

The first issue I ran into was trying to go through the steps in the troubleshooting steps of the tutorial to verify all the devices. Running iio_attr -D hmc7044-ext status on the primary board returned

ERROR: Input/output error (5)

From there I started looking at the output for iio_info on each board, and for each board I noticed all of the entries for the adrv9009-phy device channel attributes showed something like:

I found this question:  RE: ADRV9009-ZU11EG Multi-SOM usage: "Device or resource busy" which had some similar issues but ultimately did not help. To help in debugging, I've included the output from dmesg for the primary board:

To be clear, the only steps I performed to get here are:

  1. Image all 4 SD cards and copy the appropriate files to /boot
  2. Remove the jesd-eyescan application from /root/.config/autostart (After seeing I should remove anything which might be making API calls before the board is brought up. This directory is now empty)
  3. Set static IPs on all boards using enable_static_ip.sh

Any guidance would be much appreciated!

Thread Notes

Parents
  • Mmk  , I managed to track down something based on the dmesg output I provided elsewhere and some other testing. What seems to be happening is the MCS sync pulse is only being generated on CLKOUT6_P of the HMC7044_EVAL board. I verified this by editing the example script `adrv9009_som_multi.py` to only have the primary device. When it tries to do a receive, all the status updates as it steps through the JESD FSM are printed and everything works fine. However, moving the sync cable to another port (e.g. SCLKOUT5_P as shown connected to the secondary in the tutorial) the synchronization fails at `<link_setup>` as it is not receiving the pulse.

    I'm not sure how to proceed as all steps were completed according to the tutorial (at least as best I can confirm and explained in my original post). Do you have any ideas why the pulse would be present only on J4, and not, for example, J20?

    Thanks for any help you can provide

  • You need to adjust the devicetree accordingly.

    Identify the HMC7044 instance, go to the channel nodes and add:

    adi,startup-mode-dynamic-enable;

    for the channel which should output pulses.
