Adding fsm support to DAC-FMC-AD9144: SYSREF alignment error

Hi!

I am using ZCU102 + AD9144-FMC-EBZ, with meta-adi and JESD on mode 0,

where the device tree is based on this reference.

This setup is up and working (except for an frequency-dependent amplitude problem, still open here).

Meanwhile, I am trying to add another AD9144-FMC-EBZ card to the second FMC in the ZCU102,

and I understood that the way to go is through JESD204 (FSM) Interface Linux Kernel Framework.

However, AD9144 doesn't have a version for fsm, so I am trying to adapt it myself based on the patch done to AD9172:

As a first step I just want to adapt my device tree for one card.

However, when I make the to my device tree the changes made for AD9172 (only the changes indicated as /* jesd204-fsm support */),

I get a SYSREF alignment error.

Am I missing anything? Should this type of fsm adaption really work?

I am mostly worried about the clocks- since the AD9172 board has hmc7044 and a few channels coming from it and defined separately,

and in each channel this line was added: "adi,jesd204-sysref-chan; ".

In AD9144 there aren't separate channels so I skipped these lines.

Can this be the issue? If yes, how do I add these lines?

  • Hi Eliana,

    The AD9516 is not a JESD204-FSM supported clocking device.

    So you need to omit it from your topology.

    But therefore you need to set the output channel for SYSREF manually to the desired submultiple of the LMFC.

    I read a lot to understand what to do next, but am still confused:

    1. I understand it is possible to implement fsm (with two ad9144 devices) in my setup, I just need a slight modification of the connections in the topology. Is this correct?

    2. I understand that the ad9144 device tree (without fsm) is JESD subclass 1, since it has a sysref signal defined in the DAC (here):

    clocks = <&axi_ad9144_jesd>, <&clk_ad9516 1>, <&clk_ad9516 6>;
    clock-names = "jesd_dac_clk", "dac_clk", "dac_sysref";

    And I see in the relevant commit :

    AD9516 configured for:
      External CLK frequency - 2GHz
      OUT0 - 2 GHz     (DAC clock)
      OUT6 - 31.25 MHz  (DAC SYSREF)
      OUT7 - 31.25 MHz  (FPGA SYSREF)
      OUT9 - 250 MHz  (FPGA ref clock)

    So I thought to use <&clk_ad9516 6> as the sysref provider.

    Is this possible? Can you please explain me how to achieve this?

    I think I need a node under fmc_spi which calls this handle and has in it:

    		jesd204-device;

    You can use AD9516 to provide SYSREF, however since the AD9516 is not a jesd204-fsm device you must not add these jesd204-fsm devicetree properties in it's node.

    DAQ2 uses AD9144 with the FSM. The clock chip is AD9523 which is also not a jesd204-fsm device.
