Operating the ADRV9009 at 208MHz

I currently have a working solution consisting of three ADRV9009 devices clocked by an HMC7044. I have the sample rate set to 245.76MSPS. I am currently using the CPLL for the RX and OBS RX and QPLL0 for the TX. I am using ADI kernel 2019_R2 branch.

I need to change my design now to 208MSPS because this is the intended frequency of the final product.

For 208MSPS RX/OBS RX, the required lane rate is 208M x 40 = 8.32Gbps (across two lanes each). This is still OK for the CPLL.

For 416MSPS TX, the required lane rate is also 8.32Gbps (across four lanes). This is outside the range of QPLL0. But it does fall within the range of QPLL1.

1) Does the 2019_R2 branch support running the TX with CPLL too?

2) I have seen that I can select QPLL1 in the device tree by changing 'adi,sys-clk-select' to 2. When I do this, I get the following output:

Is there anything else I need to change to use QPLL1? Does the HDL need to change to use QPLL1?

  • While keeping my design at 245.76MSPS (so as to minimise the number of changes), I am going to try moving the TX to the CPLL. I noticed in the HDL block design components that I probably need to make the following changes to the axi_adrv9009_tx_xcvr configuration:

    Change 'Qpll Enable' from '1' to '0'.

    Change 'Sys Clk Sel' from "11" to "00"

    I am building this firmware now and will see if it works.

  • I would still like to find out if the axi_adxcvr IIO device driver supports running the RX, OBS RX and TX from CPLL? Else I am wasting my time trying this.

    I think it should be enough to just change the sys-clk-sel in the devicetree to CPLL.

    However I'm wondering if that is really the problem here.

    Your clock chip needs to be able to provide the required reference clocks. And from the default VCXO of 122.88MHz I don't think you can generate the required clocks. So I guess the framework asks for a certain rate the clock chip sets to something close but not exact and the PLL doesn't lock. I don't think this will be different when using CPLL.

    I'm sure your kernel log includes more errors besides the lock error?

  • I have an HMC7044 generating the clocks. For now, I have kept the sample rate at 245.76MSPS so that I can try and get the TX working on the CPLL before moving to 208MHz. I know that the clocks are correct because the TX works when running QPLL0.

    I made the changes to the HDL configuration and built the firmware and the result was still the same. Here is my complete dmesg output with the change to CPLL:
