isoPower FAQ: Is there overload protection in the ADuM5x1x and ADuM6x1x products?

Yes – These devices contain a Thermal Shutdown circuit that turns off the tank oscillator if the temperature rises to 150C.  The Thermal Shutdown circuit has about 10C of hysteresis so the temperature must drop 10C before the part automatically restarts.  If the fault that caused the overload persists, then it will cycle on and off until the fault is removed.  We chose to implement a thermal shutdown rather than a current limit because it takes ambient operating temperature into account shutting off the part at lower output power at high ambient temperature.
