When choosing the RS485 transceiver, the supported data rate is a factor to consider. However, it is not as simple as “the faster the better”. In fact, it should be chosen based on actual needs. The selected RS485 transceiver should support data rates higher than the system requirement; but it is not necessary to choose a component that has data rate much higher than the baud rate of the component itself. Since lower speed components with slew rate limit will provide a better EMI performance, the reflection brought about by poor matching will be lowered. For networks with multiple nodes, the supported length of the transmission line can be longer as a result.
