Question:
In our layout and connector placement we are getting swap between P and N. The MAX4986 datasheet says swap is allowed, but what is the correct way to implement the swap? For example, if I make swap in the INP, INM, would I need to make swap in OUTAP, OUTAM also? If I make swap in TX, would I need to make swap in RX also?
Answer:
As long as the SATA+ and SATA- signals of the two end devices are consistent, it should be ok. Therefore, if you make a swap on the inputs, you will have to swap on the outputs before you connect to the other end device. MAX4986 is ok with differential pair polarity reversal on input and output. Similar principle holds for both TX and RX.
