Are external digital inverters required to use with the MAX3120?
External inverters aren't required. UART lines typically idle high, so an inverter is put in the TX path so that the idle input to the TXD pin of the MAX3120 is a logic '0', which will keep the LED off by default. The use of inverters really depends on how the MAX3120 input is driven and the desired idle output level.
