It should be noted that this article describes the behavior of the MAX3322E outputs (ROUT_) when VCC is completely removed.
The ROUT_ pins have an absolute maximum rating of -0.3V to (VL + 0.3V). Because the absolute maximum rating is referenced to VL, it means that there are ESD protection diodes on that pin that are connected to VL and GND. See the schematic below for a visual.
The behavior of ROUT_ depends on the state of VL when VCC is removed. If VL = 0V and ROUT_ has a voltage greater than 0.3V, current will flow through the diode D1 from whatever source is present at ROUT_. For a negative voltage at ROUT_, current will flow through D2 into whatever source is present at ROUT_. The bottom line is that ROUT_ is not high impedance when VCC is removed.
When the MAX3322E is properly powered, the part can be put into shutdown mode, and ROUT_ will be high impedance. That is the recommended approach for removing the MAX3322E when it is not being used in a system.
