Digital Isolator for SPI Interface

Hi,

For our new project, we are planning to isolate the digital signal ( SPI Interface ) used in between a Micro controller & an ADC. Our isolation requirement is 1.5kV.

Supply voltage will be 3.3V or 5V.

  1. Could you please suggest us the best Digital Isolator  part number from Analog Device, which is being used for the SPI Interface isolation.
  2. Also please let me know, whether you have any Digital Isolator which isolates both data & power

Best Regards

Sharvy

  • Hi Sharvy,

A  nominal supply voltage of 3.3V or 5.0V will power all SPIsolator Digital Isolators. The ADuM3150/ADuM3151/ADuM3152/ADuM3153 SPIsolator devices will cover your isolation requirement. The ADuM3150 device will support a SPI clock rate up to 40MHz and has 2 independent low speed data channels. The ADuM3151/ADuM3152/ADuM3153 devices support SPI clock rates up to 17MHz and have 3 independent low speed data channels in different directional configurations.

isoPower would be the product line for isolated power and data. The isoPower product selection guide is here:

    http://www.analog.com/en/products/interface-isolation/isolation/isopower.html

There are isoPower devices with data channels included in the same package. They are available with 2 or 4 data channels in different forward/reverse  directional configurations. The isoPower devices are available for 150mW and 500mW isolated output power. What are the power and data channel counts needed? I can help narrow down the selection.

    Thanks,

    Jason

  • Hi Jason,

    Thanks for the feedback.

We are planning to use it for the SPI interface. Which has 3 output and one input ( MOSI,CS,CLK  & MISO from the host ).It will be powered from 5V DC supply. Maximum power requirement would be around 350mW.

Kindly suggest us the best part number you have from the Isopower series.

    Best Regards

  • Hi Sharvy,

Alright, it sounds like there are no slave selects or additional low speed data channels in your application. You could consider an ADuM3150 for the SPI channels and an ADuM5000 for isolated dc/dc converter. The ADuM5000 will provide you a power budget up to 500mW.

If you would like to set up the SPI channels on your own, the ADuM5401 will provide 500mW isolated power to slave side. The ADuM5401 has 3 forward data channels and 1 reverse data channel built in.
