ADuM4472 Primary side: 5V power and 3V3 digital, Secondary side: all 5V

I would like to use this powerfull IC in the following configuration:

Primary side voltages:

  • IC power supply (Pin#8 Vdda): 3V3
  • Transformer power supply (Center tap): 5V

Secondary (isolated) side voltages:

  • 5V

I would like to achive:

  • 5V to 5V power isolation (with 2,5W output power!)
  • Data isolation between 3V3 digital primary side and 5V digital secondary side

(So basically I will use this chip in its 3V3 / 5V configuration, but with a separate 5V power supply for the transformer (1CT:2CT) on the primary side to get the 2,5W output power rating.)

Can somebody confirm that this IC is capable of this operation?

Thank you very much for any help in advance!

Best regards,

perla

The ADuM447x will work in the configuration you asked about. The efficiency may be just a little lower, since the VDDA voltage also powers the gate driver to the internal power switches and will be at 3.3V instead of 5V.  But the power switch loss is only a small part of the total loss, so the curves would have a slight difference from the datasheet curves.  Note that the 2.5W is a typical rating, and includes the current needed to power the internal digital isolators up to 2Mbps as described in the datasheet specifications. Additional supply current for faster data rates than 2Mbps you would need to account for current needed as described in the Power Consumption section.
