    Hi,
    

    The MAX22196 input pins can withstand up to +/-1.2kV 1.2us/50us surge pulses (42ohm/0.5uF) with at least 680ohm pulse withstanding resistors in front of the input pins. With 680ohm series resistor, no additional TVS diode is required at the input pin for surge protection.
    

    An alternative is to use a bidirectional TVS between the input and GND to protect the input pin from surge transients. The TVS must clamp the surge voltage below the ABS MAX of the input pins, which is +/-40V.
    

    The MAX22196 datasheet provides more details for surge protection on page 58, section "Surge Protection of Field Inputs".
    

    If higher than +/-1.2kV surge level is desired, a resistor with higher resistance is required. The resistor value should be proportional to the surge level the system requires.
