Intrinsically Safe

Category: Hardware
Product Number: ADM2483

I'm designing a modem interface board that needs to be Class 1, Division 1 (intrinsically safe) certified. It will be interfacing with another C1D1 device so it needs galvanic isolation. Is the ADM2483 rated/certified/suitable for such applications?

Just wondering if anyone has successfully designed this into a product and had it pass for C1D1 or Intrinsically Safe (EU).

It does state this in the datasheet:

  • UL recognition: 2500 V rms for 1 minute per UL 1577
  • CSA Component Acceptance Notice 5A
    • IEC 60950-1 800 V rms (basic), 400V rms (reinforced)
  • VDE Certificate of Conformity
    • DIN V VDE V 0884-10 (VDE V 0884-10): 2006-12
    • VIORM = 560 V peak (reinforced)
    • VIORM(DC) = 1500 V dc
  • CQC certification per GB4943.1-2011

Also, are there any other ADI devices that have galvanic isolation for communications? UART, SPI, I2C?

  • Our isolators are not presently specifically rated or certified for intrinsically safe (IS) applications; however, I know that some of our customers have successfully designed some of them into their IS applications.   The specific examples I am aware of involved our data isolators, which use the same isolation technology as our transceivers. These parts did not include an isolated power supply and so the energy limiting requirements were addressed elsewhere in the system design.

In some IS schemes, having IEC60747-17 certification can simplify the IS design/certification process.   Even though the datasheet presently doesn't list it (and it needs to be updated), the ADM2483 has been certified under IEC60747-17 (VDE Certificate of Conformity (IEC60747-17:2020+AC:2021).   Our most up to date list of certifications for all of our isolators is maintained on this webpage: Safety and Regulatory Certification for Isolators - it is updated shortly after certifications are updated/received, while datasheets have a longer timeline for updates due to the editing process.

We have many other galvanic isolators, including parts targeted for data/logic isolation, bi-directional logic such as I2C as well as parts specially targeted for SPI.  We also have high-speed isolators which support LVDS and USB.   See Digital Isolation Technology for more information.
