MAX13487E isn't working

Question

I'm trying to communicate between two MAX13487E. With a logic analyzer I see the data go into the first IC, comes out as A/B correctly, goes into the second IC, but it doesn't come out. I'm at a loss as to why. 
 I first tried RE tied to 5V, then tried to GND instead. 
 Here are the two sides, sender for this test:

Turns out the receiving ESP32 was using light sleep to run the loop slower and reduce current consumption. That shutdown the UART some of the time, resulting in some really wacky behavior. It was painful, but all is OK now.)
