RJ45 and SPE co-exist on a single ADIN1110 ? (only one used)

Category: Hardware

We're doing a new Ethernet controller and want both RJ45 and SPE available - but only one used at a time. Is it possible & practical? In a way , I am asking if a 'normal' ethernet data cable and data/addressing can be processed by ADIN1110.

Or maybe there are reasonable ethernet-to-SPE converters/switches out there?

  • Hi Claus,

It is possible to use cat5/cat6 cables for SPE (only using one pair of wires) and it is possible to use the same RJ45 connector as well. However, if a design like this was to be implemented, only one PHY must be transmitting at a time and one needs to make sure that the front-end circuitries don't interact with each other and/or provide a way to disconnect one PHY from the transmission line when the other is transmitting.

Yes, the data addressing would be seamless through either physical layer.

To your last question, you may refer to our evaluation board EVAL-ADIN1100EBZ which is a media converter.

  • Thanks - I'll rephrase:

We're doing a SPE based on the ADIN1110.

Could we add an RJ45 connector to allow all those applications (60-80%) that still have no system based on SPE ?

The alternative is a reasonable converter RJ45-to-SPE (<200$).

  • Hi Claus,

If what you need is a system that automatically selects between 10BASE-T1L for long reach and traditional ethernet for legacy instruments using an RJ45 connector and use one of the two. You can not use both at the same time as the circuitry will effect the signal unless you make sure that only one at a time is used by keeping one turned off and fully disconnected from the transmission line through a couple of switches to isolate and avoid signal integrity issues.

The selection between one of the other PHY has to be implemented in software in a way that only one PHY is active at a time and that each PHY has enough time to try to connect before giving up to the other PHY.

  • Thanks a lot Shazia

I'll try to find (or build) a good & reasonable converter back and/or forth RJ45<->SPE if they cannot use the same PHY chip (ADIN1110).

  • You're welcome, Claus.

If there are no further issues, could you please close the thread? Should you have any additional questions or require further assistance, please feel free to start a new one.
