ADIN2111 single-supply idling power consumption

I am measuring power consumption on the AVDD_H, AVDD_L, and VDDIO rails for the EVAL-ADIN2111, and am seeing higher-than-expected consumption. I'd like to understand why this is the case, and get help lowering the power consumption.

I have the ADIN2111 connected to a STM32L496 nucleo board, with the processor onboard the ADIN2111 held in reset. With all 3 buses (AVDD_H, AVDD_L, and VDDIO) powered from 3V3, and the system idling (both PHY activated, and connected in loopback from link 1 to link 2, but not sending or receiving any data), I am seeing a total of 232mW -- 120mW on AVDD_H, 100mW on AVDD_L, and 12mW on VDDIO. This total of 232mW somewhat exceeds the spec given in the datasheet for single-supply, 2.4Vp-p operation at "100% data throughput, full activity" -- the datasheet lists a max power consumption in that state of 215mW. Moreover, given that no data is being sent or received, I would expect a power consumption significantly lower than the spec of 215mW.

1. What is the expected power consumption for an ADIN2111 when the links are active, but not sending or receiving data?

2. Why is my consumption higher than levels described in the datasheet, and what can I do to lower it?

  • For added context and comparison, I also tried putting the system into the 1.0 Vp-p transmit setting (by changing the dip-switch), and setting AVDD_H and AVDD_L down to 1.8V (I kept VDDIO at 3V3 because the system stops working when I move it to 1V8; another mystery which I'm putting on the back burner for now). With this setting, the power consumption was lower than before, but still higher than what's listed in the datasheet.

    The ADIN2111 datasheet says to expect 77mW in this state when sending data full-blast; however I am measuring 107mW (39mW on AVDD_H, 54mW on AVDD_L, and 14mW on VDDIO). This measurement was taken in a loopback configuration with both links active, but not sending or receiving any data. Any thoughts on why I'm seeing higher-than-expected consumption?

    Jumper settings:

    J101; P22: jumper between "SH" and earth GND.

    P4: all 3 jumpers present (USB, EXT, GND).

    P11: VCCuC to 3V3.

    P10: "PULSE SKIP" to "BURST".

    J2: jumper installed.

    P13 - P15: power buses connected either to 1v8 or 3v3, as described in scenarios above.

    DLDO_1V1_B to DLO_1V1

    DLDO_1V1_A to DLO_1V1

    P25: RESET_N

    P8: GND

    Dip-switch settings:

    S2: both off or both on depending on Vp-p signal setting as described in scenarios above.

    S3: P1_SWPD_EN_N on, P2_SWPD_EN_N off

    S1: SPI_CFG0 on, API_CFG1 off

    S4: 0 off, 1 on, 2 on, 3 off
