Well, the question mentioned mathematical prowess so, simple adding doesn't really cut-any-mustard does it. So subtract 1 from 11 and multiply the result by 3

Thanks AndyBrit , I understand the paradox you mention... But the quiz is really mentionning the sum (thus no subtraction, nor multiplication...). There is well a trap hidden..

The trap is perhaps:
the ball "9" could be read "6" so if you add 11 and 13, you get 30 ?

3 odds do not an even make

Sure bradstev22 , adding 3 odd integers cannot end to any even number! But look carefully the picture... Are you sure all the balls carry odd numbers?

This is true, the problem states that the value of the ball is 9, but since the balls are all black and white, you could use a 9 ball upside down.
