Article The Value of Distinctive Avatars

The value of distinctive avatars by KJBob

The sunset scene appearing everywhere on EZ is apparently the default member avatar.  It's an improvement over the gray silhouette defaults often found on message boards, but every bit as generic.  The idea behind avatar images is to help members intuitively recognize distinct individuals -- yet the default avatar defeats this purpose.  For example, it renders this graphic rather silly:

While a distinctive avatar is not required to use this board, it does make our posts stand out.  And it's easy to do.  In order of increasing creativity, we can:

  • Choose one of the many ready-made avatars provided
  • Upload a photo -- yourself, a pet, whatever
  • Draw one!  I've seen a few really cool ones here

     Best regards,

     Bob

Well said

A unique avatar is a visual cue that helps to distinguish between members. Especially helpful when users have similar names. Create your own personal brand and stand out.

It only takes two minutes to change your avatar.

  • Click on your name in the upper right corner
  • Choose Edit Profile
  • Scroll Down and click on an avatar OR upload your own by clicking on "Add another avatar"
  • Click Finished

Choose one of these or get creative and make your own!

      Hello Lisa,

I've uploaded an original (drawn) avatar, but have second thoughts about switching to it.   Might doing so prove confusing to other members?

BTW -- The moderation issues I'very previously experienced are gone -- thanks!

      Best regards,

      Bob

Hi Bob,

There are two schools of thought on this: "don't fix it if it's not broken" and "keep it fresh". People already associate you with the black and white cat and may not realize at first glance that it is you whom has posted. However, you also have a distinctive username and there is nothing wrong with changing up the avatar image. Who knows it may spark someone else to add a unique avatar.

My opinion: I think it's okay to switch your avatar. People will hover over the username and realize it is you.

Thanks!

Lisa

      Hello Lisa,

Done!  (I'm a big fan of James Gurney's Dinotopia and prehistoric creatures generally -- check out the fan "art" in my profile).  With apologies to my black and white cat Roland .....

      Thanks, Bob
