AD9082 + ZCU102 'HMC_STATUS' Red LED is On

I followed the steps in "AD9081/AD9082 Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC ZCU102 Quick Start Guide": https://wiki.analog.com/resources/eval/user-guides/ad9081_fmca_ebz/quickstart/zynqmp to boot the ZCU102 board on Linux and use the AD9082 Evaluation Board. 

The ZCU102 boots successfully. All other LEDs are on and green on the AD9082 Eval Board, but the HMC_STATUS LED  is on and red:

 shows only:

And the IIO Oscilopce software on the ZCU102 cannot detect the AD9082 Eval board.

I followed the Start Guide steps using the pre-built SD card that came within the AD9082 package. I also did them again using a brand new SD card building the latest lease (2019_R2), but the HMC_STATUS led is always red. The start guide mentions some VXCO variations (100mhz and 122.88mhz) for the device tree file. I tried them both, but it didn't show any difference. I need some help to troubleshoot this problem.

Also, I am a bit confused about the board-specific files. The start guide says copying 3 files from 

zynqmp-zcu102-rev10-ad9081-m8-l4
directory to the BOOT partition of the SD card. Is AD9082 using the same files as the AD9081?

  • For AD9082 you need to use a different device tree and updated kernel since it was added post the 2019-R2 release. You will see the error in the log:

    The device tree you need is zynqmp-zcu102-rev10-ad9082-m4-l8.dtb built with these instructions: https://wiki.analog.com/resources/tools-software/linux-build/generic/zynqmp

    You will need the kernel from the build as well.

    Make sure you are using the master branch from github as the 2019-R2 branch does not contain this device tree and kernel updates.

  • It works! The device now shows up after using the new device tree and kernel. 

    The HMC_STATUS LED is off now, but the IRQB0 LED is on and red. The device is shown as ad9081 instead of ad9082. The idle temperature is a bit high (~74°C) with the heatsink and fan. Do you know if they are normal?

    What I missed was I didn't build a new BOOT.BIN which caused the mismatch between the device tree and HDL. 8M4L is for ad9081 and 4M8L is for ad9082. Then I followed the instruction here: https://wiki.analog.com/resources/tools-software/linux-build/generic/zynqmp

    o build the HDL for AD9082+ZCU102, which is one of the parameters to build BOOT.BIN. For the u-boot.elf, the Xilinx Wiki page which shows how to build u-boot is not responding since last week, so I just used the u-boot.elf for AD9081+ZCU102 from the Quick Start Guide (https://wiki.analog.com/resources/eval/user-guides/ad9081_fmca_ebz/quickstart/zynqmp)
    Here is the boost message after using the newly built BOOT.BIN. The mismatch is gone but there are still some failures and errors.

  • Your BOOT.BIN works! Before trying your BOOT.BIN, I built the u-boot.elf for zcu102 rev1.1 from this guide: https://xilinx-wiki.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/A/pages/18841973/Build+U-Boot. Using this u-boot.elf and the previous HDF, I got a new BOOT.BIN, but it was not functional at all after testing. Now I am just using your BOOT.BIN since yours worked. Thanks! May I know what is your procedure to build the BOOT.BIN? Which Vivado/PetaLinux version did you use? When you built the BOOT.BIN, did you specify it is for ZCU102 rev1.0 or rev1.1?
