From Baseband Design to FAE: The Career Risk That Paid Off
Hamed's career has deep technical roots. Over 20 years ago, he was a cellular BTS (Base Transceiver Station) baseband card designer at Motorola Networks, designing fixed wireless terminals and later leading a team of GSM/CDMA/LTE engineers. At the time, moving from RF (Radio Frequency) baseband design to an FAE (Field Application Engineer) role felt like a huge career risk a pivot many engineers hesitate to make.
Looking back, he says with total certainty: it was more than worth it. "The past 20 years have been amazing," Hamed shares. The lesson he's carried ever since? Don't fear the discomfort of change. "It's always challenging in the moment, but the long-term gain is what deserves your focus." For anyone weighing a career pivot in engineering, that perspective is worth holding onto.

Why the Semiconductor Industry Must Separate AI From Quantum
If Hamed could wave a magic wand and change one thing about the semiconductor industry, it would be the habit of collapsing "AI" and "quantum computing" into a single hype narrative as if they're two halves of one inevitable revolution on the same schedule.
They aren't. The challenges that AI addresses are largely different from the issues that quantum computing aims to solve. Hamed finds it genuinely fascinating to watch the simultaneous maturation of both technologies in history, but conflating them does a disservice to each. It's a sharp reminder for all of us to keep the conversation precise as these semiconductor technology trends evolve.
Reading the Room: A Hidden Talent for People
What's something Hamed is surprisingly good at that few people know about? He shares, “I read people quickly (and accurately for the most part, I think), often within the first conversation.”
He also keeps the long view, staying oriented to what moves his goals forward rather than just the next task in front of him. It's a skill set that clearly serves him well in a customer-facing Field Application Engineer career.
Unplugged: How Hamed Recharges Beyond the Desk
When it's time to unwind and recharge, Hamed loves technical writing and traveling. His other favorite hobbies include playing and watching sports, and connecting with family and friends. A balance of mind, motion, and meaningful connection.
The Honest Truth About Work-Life Balance in the Industry
Work-life balance is something Hamed is candid about: he's terrible at it. In 20 years, he can count on one hand the times he used his full vacation allotment. He always leaves days on the table. Sometimes it's the demands of the industry, but mostly it's the career pressure he puts on himself. "I can't remember ever being in any other way," he admits. It's something he has been actively working on. His honesty reminds us that maintaining work-life balance in tech is an ongoing effort.
