Energy Metering IC that can also be used as AC ammeter

Category: Hardware

I have a project that requires the flexibility to measure AC power (voltage and current) or measure AC current only (without measuring voltage), depending on the application requirements. Can the ADE9153A or any other Energy Metering IC, still function even if the voltage pins are not connected, and output only the current readings?

  • In theory all of our parts can do AC and DC RMS by disabling the HIGHPASS  filter. This does have a problem  with power measurement. Any dc from the voltage and current channels(modulator offsets) will be multiplied together and become power.  This will cause more power than expected where doing AC calibration.

I think an ADC would be best with really low dc offset and drift
