"internet radio" is way too vague a term ... it does not indicate what aspect you're looking for: transport, codec, playlists, etc...
there is no difference between the mplayer found in the uclinux-dist and the upstream mplayer. so any documentation you find in the upstream website is applicable:

But yes - I use both mplayer and mp3play to listen to internet radio stations (which stream mp3).

Do you mean after successfully compiled the mplayer, it can play the internet radio without any modification? Have both program implemented the Real Time Transport(RTSP) ?
