I constantly get an message on the console:
PHY: 0:00 - Link is Up - 100/Half
PHY: 0:00 - Link is Up - 100/Full
What does it mean? I think my link is constantly up, so why repeat this message?

the msg gets printed every time the status changes. check the cable/hardware to make sure the wires arent floating and thus causing the phy to detect half/full duplex changes.

Mike,
Is the status change caused by the phy or by the ethernet software? Supposed I change the ip-number (this has nothing to do with the phy): would there be a status change like this?

the phy signals a status change and the mac reacts and issues the printk
or you can manually signal a status change, but nothing in software will do that for you ... just changing IP settings has no bearing whatsoever on the mac/phy layer. if you review the OSI model, the mac/phy settings are below the network level (layer 3).

OK, thanks. I will check the hardware.

Well, when this sort of messages appear, one might check if a pull-up resistor is connected to the MDIO pin (at least this applies to Micrel KSZ 8721).
For a software workaround, refer to "netperf results"
