What kind of license is the GNU Toolchain released under?

Unfortunately, there is no single license that covers everything.  The GNU Toolchain is made up of many different components, Linux even more, each released under a variety of licenses.  For example GCC and readline are licensed under GPL3 (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html), whereas Busybox and u-boot are licensed under GPL2 (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/gpl-2.0.html), Linux itself is also licensed under GPL2 but with exclusions for user programs, uclibc is licensed under LGPL (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/old-licenses/lgpl-2.1.html) and our libbfggots is licensed under the ADI BSD license (http://docs.blackfin.uclinux.org/doku.php?id=adi_bsd).

It is up to you and your legal department to ensure that you comply with the licenses for each component that you use.
