EV-21569-SOM and EV-SOMCRR-EZKIT stopped working

Thread Summary

The user experienced a 'Failed to connect to processor' error and the DSP chip on the EV-21569-SOM became too hot to touch. After troubleshooting, it was determined that the issue was with the SOM board. The user received a replacement SOM board, but the issue reoccurred with another SOM board. The support engineer suggested checking the power supply voltages and connector pins, and inquired about any additional boards connected to the SOM.

We are using EV-21569-SOM and EV-SOMCRR-EZKIT hardware, and also using Debug-Agent on EV-SOMCRR-EZKIT board.

It was working fine until yesterday, but today It did not work with the following message:
"Failed to connect to processor"
Furthermore, DSP chip on SOM board was too hot to touch at that time.

Do you see what problem is happening?

If I were to newly install ICE-1000 or ICE-2000 and connect it instead of Debug-Agent, would that make it work?

Best Regards,
Junki Asai.

  • Hi Asai-San,

From your response, we suspect that there could be some hardware issue in your setup.

Could you please answer the following questions, in order to accurately determine the cause for this issue:

    1. Please share with us the screenshot results of ICE Test utility. ICE Test utility can be used to test for faulty JTAG connections, as well as testing your hardware configuration.

    2. If possible, can you try with different emulator(ICE-1000/ICE-2000) which operates correctly with the same target board and PC.

    3. If you have access to any other SOM/carrier board, could you please replace each other and check whether same heating issue occurred or not.

    4. Please refer "Jumper and Switch Settings" in the below system evaluation manuals and ensure the jumper and switch settings are set correctly in the EV-21569-SOM and EV-SOMCRR-EZKIT boards:
    www.analog.com/.../ev-21569-som-manual.pdf
    www.analog.com/.../ev-somcrr-ezkit-manual.pdf

    5. Please let us know whether you have purchased the board directly from Analog Devices or from distributor.

    Waiting for your reply.

    Regards,

  • Hi Santhakumari-san,
    Thank you for your reply.

For Q1, the following message are output:
[TpsdkServer] Failed to connect to processor.
    Error: 0x8004804b
Error Description: Failed passing JTAG loop test

Furthermore, on "Device Manager" of windowsPC, "ADSP-21569 USB EZ-KIT" is no longer displayed.

For Q2, we do not have another emulator for the moment.

For Q3, we have another SOM-carrier-board pair. If we exchange SOM and carrier board each other, I found SOM was the problem.

For Q4, I think we have the jumpers and switches set correctly.

For Q5, These boards are purchased through Macnica, which is a distributor in Japan. We are also asking them to get another SOM board.

    Best regards,
    Junki Asai.

  • Hi Asai-san,

We have created a separate ticket for this query and tracking ID is CS-461176-B0C3L6.

We will communicate via this ID for further conversation.

    Best Regards,

  • Hi Santhakumari-san,

We talked with the distributor, Macnica.
They agreed to provide us with one SOM board for free as compensation. We are waiting for it to arrive.

    Thank you for your arrangement.
    Best regads,
    Junki Asai.

  • Hi Asai-san,

Thank you for the update. Hope you received the board.

  • Hi Santhakumari-san,

We got new SOM-board, and the board is working fine.
However, another SOM-board suddenly stopped working in exactly the same situation. Similarly, the DSP chip becomes too hot to touch. The two SOM-boards are now in the same state.

We are concerned about whether there are any weak points in the chip or whether there is someting wrong with how it is being used on the SOM-board.

If other customers have reported similar issues, or if there is any information about related chip or board fixes or workarounds, could you please share these information?

    Best regards,
    Junki Asai.

  • Hi Asai-san,

Apologies for the delay in getting back to you.

Please check test points on the SOM power supply to make sure that the voltages are correct. Also make sure that the connectors don’t have any bent pins.

Also please let us know whether you have connected any additional board to the SOM.

    Waiting for your reply.

    Best Regards,
    Santhakumari.K
